Since the establishment of the World Federation of the Deaf in 1951, there were always deaf youth attending World Congresses, but there was nothing officially in place till 1987.
1987 – First gathering of Deaf Youth at the WFD World Congress, Espoo, Finland. A "youth" working group was established.
1991 – WFD World Congress in Tokyo, Japan, again saw a youth gathering with informal forums and discussions. An unofficial selection took place and established a Youth Group. This group worked hard to host the first Youth Camp, developing a network of deaf youth from different countries. 1995 – The first WFD Youth Camp was held prior to the World Congress in Austria. There were 97 participants from 23 countries.During the WFD Congress the first formal WFDYS Youth Forum was held, delegates from 21 countries participated. There were also another youth forum that continued, with all youth members sitting outside in a circle on the grass, discussing and debating ideas. There were five members selected to a Youth Section.
1997 – First WFD Jr. Youth Camp was held in Ireland. 1999 – There was a second WFD Youth Camp in Brisbane, Australia, prior to the World Congress. At the World Congress, a Youth Forum was held with delegates from 17 participating countries. Again, five new members were selected to the WFDYS.

2001 – The second Jr. Youth Camp took place in Lisbon, Portugal with 86 participants from 14 countries. 2003 – Prior to the World Congress, the third Youth Camp took place in Val Morin, Canada. At the World Congress, in Montreal, a Youth General Assembly was held, using the same hall as the WFD General Assembly. The delegates, from 25 countries, also accepted the first WFDYS Internal Rules, and the number of WFDYS increased from five to seven. 2005 – Third WFD Jr. Youth Camp was held in Sweden. 2006 – First Children Camp was hosted in Castbergaard, Denmark, for 10-12 years old. 2007 – The 4th WFD Youth Camp took place with the biggest number of participants (106 from 41 countries) and there was also a large turnout at the Youth General Assembly with 42 participating countries.
